Getting Started

How do I get a library guest card?

A patron requesting a library guest card needs to come to Cunningham Memorial Library at the Library Information Services desk.

How do I borrow library materials?

Most patrons may borrow library books by presenting their Student ID Card or Library Guest Card if you are over 18 years of age and can present a valid Driver's License or photo identification.

I'm not from ISU. Can I borrow?

Yes, one may borrow most of the books or items from CML even though you are not from ISU with a Library Guest Card. Library Guest patrons can not check out browsing media items.

What are your hours?

Library hours vary depending on the time in the semester. Our current hours can always be found at the top of the right hand column, or you can take a look at our calendar.

Your Account

Can I access my account online?

Yes, you may access your account online to renew books and see due dates.

What if I move?

If you move, please fill out a change of address form at the Library Information Services desk so that your patron record may be edited.

What if I have lost my library card?

Please inform the Library Information Services desk that your card has been lost. You are responsible for any materials checked out on your account.

How many library materials am I allowed to check-out?

The current limit, as per the library policy, is 250 items.

Why is there a block on my library account?

A staff member would need to check into your record and discover the reason for the block. If you find a block on your library account, please call (812)237-2541.

Why is an item that I returned still on my account?

If an item is still on your account after you've returned it, please fill out the online search request form.

How much do I pay if I lose or damage library materials?

The amount would vary according to the price of the item. You would be billed a replacement cost for the item plus an non-refundable $10.00 fee.

Borrowing Items

What can I borrow from the library?

ISU Affiliated patrons may borrow Books, Journals, Periodicals, Government Documents, Textbooks, Videos, CDs, Micro materials (film, fiche, card), some equipment. Library Guest patrons can not check out browsing media items.

How long can I keep a library materials?

Undergraduate Students: 21 days
Graduate Students: 120 days
ISU Faculty and Staff: 180 days
Library Guests: 21 days

Can I renew my library materials?

Books may be renewed up to three (3) times online, by phone (237-2541) or at the main Check Out Desk.

Will I get a reminder that my library materials are due?

When items are checked out at the Library Information Services desk, a dated receipt will be offered to the patron. In addition, a courtesy reminder will be sent just before the item is due. For ISU Faculty, Staff and Students the email notice will come to your ISU Account. If no email account is given, Library Guest patrons will be mailed a paper notice.

How can I get an item that someone has checked out?

You can request a recall for any library material on loan to another patron. Notification of the recall is issued immediately, but the initial 3 weeks (for books) or 1 week (for media) due date will not be shortened.

What happens when someone wants an item I have?

A recall will be placed and you will be notified that someone else has requested the item.

How do I find an item not on the shelf?

Fill out the "Search for item not on shelf" form online. When the item is located, it will be held for you and you will be notified of its availability.

I am a faculty member. Can someone else checkout materials for me?

Yes - through "Proxy Borrowing."" It allows you to enable a graduate assistant/office assistant to check out library materials for you using your ISU ID without having to carry and present your ID to library staff. Authorize Proxy Borrowing by filling out the form and bringing it to the library.

The library does not have a book or article that I need. How can I access it?

If you need materials that ISU does not own, the Interlibrary Loan Department may be able to get it for you.

Returning Items

Where can I return an item?

Items may be returned through he outside book drops located on the south, north, and east sides of Cunningham Memorial Library, or through the inside book drop at the Library Information Services desk. Reserve items MUST be returned directly to the Library Information Services desk.

Where do I return ILL items?

Interlibrary Loan items may also be returned through the outside book drops located on the south, north, and east sides of Cunningham Memorial Library, or through the inside book drop at the Library Information Services desk.

How can I be sure that my item was returned?

Return the item to the Library Information Services desk and request a discharged receipt. You may also access your account to make sure a returned item has been taken off your account.

May I return items that I have borrowed from other libraries?

You may return items from other libraries by bringing the items to the Library Information Services desk and filling out a special form for other libraries.

Reserves

What are reserves?

Reserves are items that a faculty/teaching staff has placed on reserve to assist classroom research.

Where are they located?

These items are available at the Library Information Services desk.

How do I check them out?

Bring your ISU ID card to the Library Information Services desk and ask for the item under the faculty member's name or course name.

What is the loan period for reserve items?

Items placed on reserve may be borrowed for 2hrs, 4hrs, 1 day, 3 days, or 7 days depending upon limits established by the instructor. Reserve items are only available to ISU affiliates.

Can I renew reserve items?

Unfortunately, no renewals are allowed on Reserve items.

An item on reserve has been checked out. Can I place a hold on the item when it is returned?

Holds cannot be placed on reserve items.

What are the fines for late reserve items?

The library is not currently assessing fees for overdue reserve items. However, items tagged as "lost" will be billed at full replacement value.

Paging

Can I request an item to be pulled from the stacks for me?

Yes. Placing a hold on an available item will trigger libray staff to pull the item overnight. You may pick up the item after 6 am the next day.
