The Papers of Eugene V. Debs, 1834-1945: A Guide


The Papers of Eugene V. Debs, 1834-1945: A Guide to the Microfilm Edition (MCI, 1983), edited by J. Robert Constantine and Gail Malmgreen, serves as the published guide to the microfilm edition of Debs correspondence; published writings and speeches; a group of scrapbooks; and "Debs Remembered," a group of more than 30 essays recounting Debs's importance. The microfilm set contains three series on 21 reels. The index to Series I, or the correspondence, provides access to microfilmed documents held by both public and private collections.

In recent years, the collection was the subject of a project designed to abstract the locally held correspondence. During the course of the project, a handful of omissions and errors were discovered in the published index to Series I. The two tables below list letters omitted from Constantine and Malmgreen's original index and entries found to be incorrect. As Constantine's work explains, "letters have been indexed by the name of the correspondent, with the exception of Eugene and Theodore Debs; under their own names only the brothers' letters to each other have been listed . . . . In the index entry for each correspondent, incoming and outgoing letters are grouped separately, and listed chronologically by year, month and day. Researchers should note that enclosures have been filed and indexed under the date of their covering letter" (p. 50).
