The Debs Collection, which is housed in the Special Collections Department, contains a collection of over 2,300 pamphlets, the majority of which were donated along with scattered periodical issues by the late Oscar Edelman. Additional materials have been received in smaller gifts or through purchases from booksellers such as Bibliomania and Southpaw. Funds for purchases were provided by state appropriations and annual donations from the Eugene V. Debs Foundation, located in Terre Haute, Indiana. Rather than limiting the contents of the pamphlet collection to booklets of fewer than 50 pages, for the purposes of this collection the definition of pamphlets has been broadened to include cheaply produced monographic and special-issue periodical titles that promote or represent views supporting or criticizing socialism, communism, fascism, and similar "isms." The content of the pamphlets ranges from polemical to poetical; the treatment ranges from serious to satirical. The contents of the bibliography will be updated occasionally to include materials that have been recently cataloged. Unless otherwise noted, new records will be merged into the complete listing on a periodic basis. Permission from the American Civil Liberties Union to digitize pamphlets still under copyright is gratefully acknowledged.
