Working-Class Pamphlets

Gift of the Socialist Workers Party

The Socialist Workers Party Library in Minneapolis/St. Paul graciously offered over 900 pamphlets to be added to the Debs Collection. These materials, when checked against existing holdings for duplicates, yielded 722 pamphlets which were added to the pamphlet holdings in the Debs Collection. The portion of the SWP gift which has been cataloged (through "Foley") is included in the listings of cataloged pamphlets as well as in the separate listing below.

Most of the titles in the gift are under copyright and must be used either on-site or obtained via interlibrary loan. The department gratefully acknowledges the work of Dennis Drake for facilitating the receipt of this gift.

Mr. Drake's observations on the pamphlets follow:

This collection of pamphlets is a donation to the Indiana State University library from the Socialist Workers Party in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota.

These materials cover a wide range of working-class struggles from the early years of the 20th century to the 1990s. They document many union battles, civil rights struggles, fights to defend imprisoned workers, and international campaigns in solidarity with workers in countries throughout the world. They describe activities of the Industrial Workers of the World; the debates and split within the Socialist Party through World War I; the founding of the Communist Party in 1919 and its subsequent Stalinist degeneration; the launching of the Communist League of America in 1929 and its successors, including the Socialist Workers Party in 1938.

There are numerous pamphlets on the revolution in Cuba, including many speeches by revolutionary leaders Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Some of them were published by the Fair Play for Cuba Committee, which campaigned throughout North America in the early 1960s to get the truth out about the workers and peasants revolution and to defend it from the U.S. government's military attacks. The collection also includes materials from the decade-long movement in the 1960s and '70s to protest Washington's war against Vietnam.

Some of the pamphlets are inscribed with hand-written names by activists, such as Oscar Coover, Sr., Farrell Dobbs, Vincent Raymond Dunne, and Carl Skoglund, who owned and read them and participated in the struggles described in them. They donated these materials along with many books to the library maintained by the Socialist Workers Party in the Twin Cities.

The SWP's leadership of the 1934 Teamster strikes in Minneapolis especially marked the party's branches in Minnesota. Not only did these landmark battles help open the road to the organization of millions of industrial workers nationally and to the formation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), but thousands of young workers eager to learn more about the history of the working-class movement and socialism bought, read, and shared pamphlets and books like those in this collection. For those short of cash or who couldn't afford to buy them all at once, leaders of the SWP established a library and reading area in its headquarters to make them more readily accessible. The principal impetus was provided by Carl Skoglund, an immigrant worker from Sweden, who was a founding member of the Communist Party in 1919, of the Communist League of America in 1929, and of the Socialist Workers Party in 1938. He was a central organizer of the Teamster struggles and served for a period as President of Teamsters Local 544.

Skoglund drew from his experience in Sweden in the early years of the twentieth century, where young workers gathered at reading rooms established by the International Organization of Templars to read, borrow books, and participate in study classes. He also promoted workers' libraries in every factory or lumber mill in the region where he worked. In 1911 he immigrated to Minnesota where he became a militant activist and leader in the struggles of working people. During the course of his activities he accumulated a very fine personal library of Marxist literature, which he donated in the 1930s to the SWP. It became the foundation for the party's library, and other activists followed his example by making donations.

Pamphlets and pamphleteering have a particularly rich and enduring tradition in the United States-from the publication and widespread distribution of Thomas Paine's Common Sense and the Crisis papers during the first American revolution, to the pamphlets of the abolitionist and suffragist movements of the 19th century, to the working-class struggles of the twentieth century, of which this collection is representative.
