LAUNCH OF A NEW LIBRARY-HOSTED SCHOLARLY JOURNAL in Athletic Training

In contributing to the development and delivery of scholarly communications programs and resources that impact the changing scholarly publishing landscape the ISU Library has played an important part in the launch of a new double-blind peer reviewed, open access journal called, Clinical Practice in Athletic Training: A Journal of Practice-based, Outcomes, and Action Research (Clin AT). Funded by a grant from the More to Blue Strategic Plan at ISU, and administered through the ISU Department of Applied Medicine and Rehabilitation, the vision of Clin AT is to provide an outlet for practicing athletic trainers to share their stories, successes, failures, and research in terms of patient services and practice advancement. Currently the journal will be indexed in Sycamore Scholars and Google Scholar, but plans are underway to apply for inclusion in proprietary journal indices, such as those found in EBSCO and ProQuest, after the journal has published additional issues.

The launch of Clin AT marks an exciting new chapter in scholarly publishing at ISU. Through ISU Author Services the Library is providing administrative support for the journal’s platform, PKP Version3, which is a multi-university initiative of open source software used to improve the quality and reach of scholarly publishing. Since the spring semester the Library Systems Department has been working closely with the Doctorate in Athletic Training program in setting up the configuration requirements and online workflows for submission management to Clin AT. Library Systems will continue to assist in updating and troubleshooting the software, and in training new editors in PKP online workflows.

Clin AT is the result of a strong and highly collegial partnership between the ISU Library and the College of Health and Human Services, and demonstrates ISU’s commitment in designing, maintaining, and promoting new forms of scholarly publishing and open access to information.
