Subject Headings: What Are They? Subject Headings in a record describe the main content of that particular item. They are useful because keyword searching can sometimes retrieve records that are only slightly related to your topic. The subject headings used by the library catalog are nationally recognized and have been created by the Library of Congress. Subject headings help standardize the words we use to describe a concept. When you search for records by these assigned subject headings, you will receive a more precise set of results. ![]() Cunningham Memorial Library, 650 Sycamore St., Terre Haute, IN 47809 812.237.2580 May 3rd, 2004 Maintained by: Tutorial Task Force Copyright © 2004 Indiana State University Comments and Feedback |
