Is the company public or private?

Companies can be public or private. A public company sells shares of itself to the public through a stock exchange. Public companies must file an annual 10K report with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). These disclosure documents provide detailed financial data about the company. Public companies also publish a glossier version of their annual filings for their stockholders called the annual report.

The SEC's EDGAR site allows you to search for 10K's by company name. Start by clicking on Search for Company Filings.
