Purpose: Other Types of Articles

Popular, Substantive News/General Interest and Sensational all exist to provide entertainment to their readers and to make a profit. The level and type of information differ a great deal among these sources. Popular and Substantive News/General Interest provide information on current events and hot topics to their readers. The information is usually basic and surface level; in-depth reporting of a subject does not occur within Popular or Substantive News/General Interest sources. The news found within Sensational sources is to be greeted with skepticism, their purpose is more to titillate and fascinate rather than provide solid, if basic, news information. It is often impossible to verify information found in sensational sources. These sources usually have photographs on the cover to entice readers to purchase the publication.
