Background

Why is it important to know how many times an article has been cited?

If an article proposes a revolutionary or controversial idea that many scholars want to debate, or if an article's conclusions are considered valid, then many scholars will refer to this article in their own work. An author who is cited often is usually a leading scholar in his or her field. Tracing citations is also a good way to find additional articles on a topic.
