The Lowney Turner Handy Writers' Colony:
Marshall, Illinois, 1952-54

Kenny Snedeker's Snapshots & Recollections

The Lowney Turner Handy Writers' Colony was established in 1943 and continued until about 1964. As a young man right out of high school in 1954, Kenny Snedeker joined the Handy Writers' Colony in Marshall, Illinois. Even before then in 1952, he met James Jones and Lowney and her husband Harry. He has fond memories of his association with Jones and other would-be writers he met while at the Colony. Below are snapshots from this time in Kenny's life accompanied by short sound files. The MP3 and WMA formats take much less time to download than the original WAV format recordings.

An extensive interview with Snedeker was conducted by Terre Haute journalist and writer Steve Kash. It is well worth reading from the perspective of literary history and insight into the region.
